Infographic- Factors to Consider When Buying Cat Litter in Singapore (survey results)

#1 Factor: Ability to Absorb Moisture

The #1 deciding factor for cat owners is the litter’s ability to absorb moisture — 33% of surveyees cited this as their top factor, 34.5% chose this as their #2 factor and 15% as their #3.

This is no surprise as litter with high absorption properties can remove moisture from the cat’s waste. This eases the cleanup and disposal process. Some of the most absorbent materials include clay and silica gel.

#2 Factor: Ability to Neutralise Odours

Next, cat parents found that the ability to neutralise odours is important as well. 23.3% chose this as their #1 factor, followed by 27.1% and 20.4% choosing this as their #2 and #3 factors respectively.

No one likes the smell of pee or poo! Having cat litter that can neutralise odours helps to keep your space smelling clean and fresh. Additionally, cats have sensitive noses and may avoid the litter if it starts to smell bad.

#3 Factor: Material

26% of owners cited the material of the cat litter as their #1 deciding factor when it came to choosing a product. This was followed by 15.3% and 18% who cited it as their #2 and #3 deciding factors respectively.

Since the type of material can affect other features such as moisture absorbency and tracking, some pawrents have tried a few different materials to find one that suits their and their cat’s needs. We’re sure they aren’t alone in this 😅

#4 Factor: Price

Price was chosen as the #1 deciding factor by 12.1% of parents while 15% chose it as their #2. Finally, 28.9% chose this as their #3 deciding factor.

On average, a bag of cat litter can cost anywhere between $10 to $30. Given that this is a recurring expense, it’s no wonder that price is one of the most important considerations to many owners!

Another common factor that pawrents shared includes environmental friendliness. As many individuals become more conscious of their environmental footprint, many pawrents are also looking out for biodegradable and sustainable options.

Additionally, some owners cited tracking and dust as important considerations. The presence of dust makes cleaning a hassle as it can get carried out of the litter box. It can even cause respiratory issues, especially for felines with asthma.

Best Clumping Cat Litter

A cat litter that has clumping properties is able to absorb moisture from waste and stick together to form clumps. The advantage of this is that it’s easier for pet parents to scoop out the soiled litter without having to replace the clean parts.

The entire litter box only needs to be replaced with new litter every 3 to 4 weeks. The downside to clumping litter is the slightly higher price tag as compared to non-clumping options. However, seeing as you won’t have to replace as much litter at one go, it may be more cost-effective!

FAQs About Cat Litter

Is cat litter necessary?

Cat litter and litter boxes are necessary for indoor cats. This serves as their personal “bathroom” where they can urinate and defecate and also makes it more convenient for pet parents to clean up.

How much cat litter should I use?

A general rule would be to keep the litter to 5cm – 8cm of the litter box. However, different felines may have different preferences. So, do observe your cat and see if they’re comfortable with the amount of litter.

For example, if they dig around more than necessary, it may indicate that there’s too much litter. If there’s an odour issue, it may be due to insufficient litter as the waste didn’t get absorbed properly.

How often should I change my litter?

  • For clumping litter

Litter that has clumping abilities will absorb the moisture from the cat’s waste and stick together to form a clump. Thus, the soiled litter has to be scooped out daily while the clean litter can be left as it is.

The entire litter should be replaced at least once a month or more often if more than 1 cat is using it.

  • For non-clumping litter

Non-clumping litter will not clump the waste. This litter option will need to be replaced more often — approximately twice per week if you have 1 cat and more often if you have more than 1 cat.

How long should a bag of cat litter last?

For a 9kg bag of cat litter, it may last for about 6 – 8 weeks depending on how often you change the litter and how many cats you have.

How do you make cat litter last longer?

Here are some ways you can make cat litter last longer:
• Use clumping litter
• Clean the litter box frequently
• Scoop twice a day to remove odours
• Use a scoop with holes to scoop up clumped parts
• Consider using a self-cleaning litter box
